Why An Annual Boiler Service Pays For Itself

It's not just manufacturer paperwork — a proper service cuts gas bills and catches the three failures that always strand people at Christmas.

28 February 2026Mark Smith

Most boilers die in December or January. That's not bad luck — it's load. The system works twice as hard once the temperature drops, and any weak part gives up first.

An annual service in September or October catches those weak parts before they fail. It's also the only way to keep your manufacturer warranty valid — miss one service, and most warranties are voided for the rest of their term.

What we actually check Flue integrity, gas pressure, combustion analysis, heat exchanger condition, expansion vessel charge, condensate trap, and all electrical connections. A proper service takes about 45 minutes. A cheap 'service' that takes 15 is just a visual inspection — don't accept that.

What it saves you A boiler running out of tune burns 10–15% more gas. On an average bill that's £80–£120 a year, every year. The service pays for itself the first winter.
